The Mutnovsky volcano (7669 f/2324 m) is situated 80 km to the south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. It’s famous for its crater which has the form of an ellipse and its dimensions are 2 * 1,5 km. It shows a strong fumarole activity. The last gas eruption was in 1961. In the new crater, formed in the result of the eruption in 2000 there is a blue lake. The volcano excretes large amount of energy in the form of fumarole gases and numerous powerful thermal springs. It is one of the largest in the world geothermal deposits. Its total power is evaluated in 300-400 MW. On the north - western slope of the volcano a geothermal electric station of 150 MW has been constructed recently.

At the foot of Mutnovsky volcano there is Opasniy (Dangerous) canyon with 80 meters high waterfall, formed by the river Vulkannaya.

Tour program

1 day

7.00 am Departure from PK by a heavy truck to Mutnovskiy volcano.

11.00 am Arrival to the start point of the ascending. Safety instruction. Ascending the volcano. Excursiontothecrater, fumaroles, mud cauldrons, crater lake and active crater. Lunch. Descending.

The excursion lasts 5-6hours, climb is 500-700м. Depending on the physical condition of the group an optional excursion to the Opasniy canyon and waterfall is possible.

5.00 pm Return to the truck. Dinner. Way back to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy.

8.00-10.00 pm Arrival to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy.
